Meanwhile, back in Metropolis, “Superman Returns” is just super…superfluous. Though not a shot by shot remake like the needless “The Omen” or “Psycho”, it follows much of the original 1978 movie with none of the magic.
As the title warns, Superman (Brandon Routh) returns to Earth after a visit to his extinct home Krypton. The world has moved on without him, particularly the love of his life, the abandoned Lois Lane (Kate Bosworth). As Lex Luther (Kevin Spacey) and his moll (Parker Posey) attempt to conquer the world once again, the man of steel fights his nemesis in a duel to the death.
Unlike Tobey Maguire’s “Spider Man” or even Christopher Reeve’s superhero, Routh’s man of aluminum foil has no screen presence. Bosworth, better than expected as the scorned woman who hides her feelings for the man who impregnated her then disappeared, is still no match for her predecessor, Margot Kidder.
The film feels like microwave leftovers with a lead so wooden, I felt myself praying the blue fairy would at some point turn him into a real boy. Forget the special effects remake and rent the original classics with Chris Reeve, a true “Superman.”
